An update to CS 2 that has drawn the ire of players

22 October 2023, 12:29

On October 18, the shooter's developers released an update, adding a few commands and fixing a couple of bugs. All would be fine if not for one «but»: the aliasing system has been completely redesigned, which has been strongly criticized by pro-players. Let's understand this situation in more detail.

An update to CS 2 that has drawn the ire of players

What does Alias mean?

Alias in KS2 – is an

alias

for a command, with the help of which you could execute several commands at once with one action. Previously, this feature allowed you to conveniently combine commands into a single action. Suppose «alias «+jp» «+jump creates a new jp command. When it is entered, accordingly, the character will jump.

In the CS 2 series, aliases received a limited scope of application due to the fact that, according to the developers, they were used only by a small part of the audience. But professional players have their own opinion on this.

For them, the speed at which they move is important: every sideways shift, height and length of the jump matters. In the previous version of the shooter, CS:GO, all the moves were the same, but in the current one everything has changed. They are not counted only between ticks: each movement starts and ends after the corresponding signal is received from the keyboard. In other words, every movement in the game is now unique.

The developers have worked on all the commands that are responsible for movement, but overlooked aliases. Before the latest updates, they worked the same way as in CS:GO, meaning all moves and jumps were the same. Things have changed since their introduction, and this is particularly well illustrated by the jumps. The developers prove that they are the same, but in practice it turns out to be the opposite.

In the current version of the shooter, the initial speed is determined by the moment at which the player starts moving.

Opinion of pro-players on the current changes

Chad Burchill (Spunj), a professional Counter-Strike player, is outraged by such innovations. Sure, because he himself promoted the usefulness of aliases and actively used such commands. He believes they made the game better, and is extremely unhappy that they were literally banned.

Another pro, Twistzzzz, supports the previous player. He really hopes that the previous version of aliases will be returned and it will work as it should.

Elige believes that such actions of developers will spoil if not all, then many players' impression of the new version of the shooter. He has tested and proven in practice that moves and jumps are now inconsistent.

Current status

It is known that aliases are already restricted at ESL tournaments. They forbid some commands that are responsible for movement (e.g. bind «w» «+w», alias «+w» «+forward; alias checkw _checkw»).

IEM

Sydney is still playing on the old patch.

What will happen next?

There is a possibility that problems with inconsistent movement are caused by errors in distance calculation: for example, the server may compensate the user's speed, forgetting about the distance that should be covered in a few milliseconds.  This can result in traffic problems.  If this is indeed the case and the problems are not due to a limitation of the new engine, then the game will have a perfect system after the corresponding fixes.

Interestingly, the game developer Valve has not yet explained what it wants to achieve with such innovations
