MIBR CEO Tomi «lurppis» Kovanen posted a Twitter thread where he shared his opinion on the challenges currently facing those involved in the professional CS: GO scene. First of all, he noted that tournament operators have been making significant losses in recent years. At the same time, 2020 was not at all the worst year for them – on the contrary, the organizers managed to increase their benefits by getting rid of additional costs for offline events. As we return to a LAN format, the losses may become more noticeable again.
Another problem, according to lurppis, is the fact that while the number of players is growing, there are not more spectators at tournaments. Part of the reason for this is that game schedules are often inconvenient for most fans due to time zone differences. In addition, the professional scene is becoming oversaturated with events that are organized by different tournament operators and take place literally one after another.
Kovanen believes that companies that host large events should make additional efforts to attract new viewers and look for new opportunities for monetization. If there is no change, not only tournament operators, but also cybersports organizations could face losses in the coming years as investors begin to leave for other disciplines.
