G2 are planning a coaching change

G2 team management announced midweek that Damien «maLeK» Marcel, who served as its head coach for three years, would be stepping down from the position. MaLeK has collaborated with G2 c 2018, and under his watch, several of its lineups have made notable achievements. In particular, in 2019 the team took first place in the Championship Cup Finals and in the Good Game League.

However, the team failed to win at the bigger tournaments – and at IEM Katowice in 2020 and at IEM Cologne in 2021 G2 failed. This is largely due to the fact that the team has never been able to fully adapt to the online format. Having returned to the usual LAN-matches at PGL Major Stockholm, G2 showed the same brilliant game, reaching the grand final, but in it they failed to defeat Natus Vincere.

At the same time, G2 representatives note that the decision on Marcel's departure is not directly related to the results of the tournament and was made several weeks ago, even before the major. Ian «Swani» Mueller will temporarily take over as head coach of G2. It is not yet clear who will get the position on a permanent basis. It is possible that the leadership of the cyber sports organization considers as one of the candidates Serbian cyber athlete Luka «emi» Vukovic, who until recently collaborated with FunPlus Phoenix.
